Leadership Kentucky has enjoyed an historic year. From the achievement of its milestone 40th Anniversary to the recent graduation of its fortieth class, 2024 has offered much to celebrate. And now, through one man’s unmatched generosity, this year will be remembered as the inception of a lasting legacy.
In the 1980s, John L. G. Richards was a Senior Vice President with Liberty National Bank of Louisville and chair of the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce. It was in his role with the Chamber that he helped guide the Leadership Kentucky vision into reality by assisting with program support and development. His unwavering commitment to Leadership Kentucky was forever cemented earlier this year with a $1,000,000 gift to LKY in his estate plans.
Ron Wilson, 2024 LKY Board Chair, met with Mr. Richards alongside Janice Way, LKY President and CEO, when he shared his intentions. Wilson says, “I have been a part of numerous gifts to organizations throughout the years. Of those donations, planned gifts are special because they are the result of several conversations with family, are made after mindful consideration, and the result of long relationships with the organizations they benefit.”
Janice Way has played an integral role over the past 10 years in cultivating and strengthening the relationships that are so critical to Leadership Kentucky’s lasting success. She has had the pleasure of spending time with Mr. Richards, delving into the history of the organization and the importance of his creative inspiration and key support. Way states, “For 40 years, John has been instrumental in forging relationships, developing programs and policies, financial support, and growth of Leadership Kentucky. He continues to lead the way with this incredible contribution.”
On September 4, 2024, the Leadership Kentucky Board of Directors took action to recognize Mr. Richards’ unparalleled dedication and established the John L. G. Richards Legacy Society. In his comments on the Legacy Society, Mr. Richards continues to advocate for Leadership Kentucky. He says, “For over 40 years I have watched this program exceed even Wilson Wyatt's wildest dream. I sincerely hope others will consider including Leadership Kentucky in their own estate plans so the legacy of leadership in the Commonwealth remains strong.”
