The 2021 Leadership Kentucky class met in Berea in June for our Opening Retreat and Orientation at the Historic Boone Tavern, Hotel & Restaurant at Berea College. The session centered on activities to help us get to know the program, our classmates, and a little more about Kentucky.
First, our fearless leaders Janice Way and Helen Carroll of Leadership Kentucky gave the class an overview of what to expect during the program. Classmates then were paired up for an initial get-to-know-you activity and introduced each other to the group. Outstanding student tour guides with the Berea College gave us an overview of the institution’s history and future. Eastern Kentucky University President David McFadden spoke at and hosted a dinner and reception for our class.
The next day kicked off with an informative perspective on Kentucky’s economy from Dr. Alison Davis, which provided excellent context for the remainder of the day. Our class spent the next several hours in Simulated Society (“SimSoc”), learning more about each other and ourselves. Dr. Lyle Roelofs, President of Berea College, closed out the day as our dinnertime speaker and gave us his perspective on leadership in challenging times.
The final day of our Berea Session began with a message from Chuck Session, the Lisa Murrell Award Winner of the Class of 2016. Jacob McAlister of The Oliver Group helped us de-code our Predictive Index results. We were divided into teams for part of the session and shared how our Predictive Index personality traits would impact communication and planning. As the Berea session came to a close, we discussed what to expect in July in Louisville.
